Project 7: 30 Second Video Production
The purpose of this project is to create a 30 second commercial, public service announcement, or other video idea (with teacher approval) using the online video production site Animoto. Students can work indivdiually or in groups of two on this project.
PLANNING YOUR VIDEO:
Students should answer the following questions:
Elements of Your Digital Video you need to plan for:
There are certain elements for creating effective and interesting multimedia videos. Constructing a message is not a simple process that follows a recipe or prescribed formula. These elements require consideration for every video and determining the balance each element occupies in the video can take a lot of thinking and re-thinking.
A Point of View
The purpose of your video is to make a point and should not be presented as a recitation of mere facts. Define the premise of your video so that all parts can serve to make a point. Consider your audience and direct the point to them.
A Dramatic Question
You want to capture your audience’s attention at the beginning of the piece and hold their interest throughout. Typically you want to pose the dramatic question in the opening lines and resolve it in the closing lines.
Emotional Content
Emotional content can help hold your audience’s attention. The images, effects, and music all lend to contributing emotion to the piece. Try to keep the elements consistent with the emotion of the moment.
The Soundtrack
Music is a big plus to a digital video. Music can convey emotion; changing music can evoke varying emotions. For this project, we are using the music that is inherent in the Animoto program, so your selection is somewhat limited. Select music that expresses the tension and mood of your message.
Economy
A compact, fast-moving video will contain only those elements necessary to move the audience from beginning to end. You will be graded on your ability to be concise in selecting images and text to tell your story. Remember: you only have a minute or two to entertain people!
Use the following storyboard to plan your video. Circle if the slide is going to be text or an image. Write the words or what image you want to use. If it is a textbox then you have 22 characters for the title and the 30 characters for the subtitle. No slide can have more than 52 words!
CREATING YOUR VIDEO:
Step 1: Go to http://animoto.com/ and set up an account for yourself with Animoto. Use your gmail email address during the registration process. The school promo code is: a4ecentc34a08.
Step 2: Create a Powerpoint Presentation to be saved as jpeg files and uploaded into Animoto. The Powerpoint Presentations will include pictures/images and text. When you save the Powerpoint Presentation change the the file save as type to jpeg.
Step 3: Add your PowerPoint presentation to Animoto .
Step 4: Add Music--slower music means slower slide speed, which is sometimes helpful for text-based slide reading. You can use Animoto's music, or mp3 files of your own. Click on Upload and pick the music to accompany your video.
Step 5: Link your video url to your GoogleDocs account.

Tips on Creating an Effective Animoto Videos
- Be sure to view your Animoto a few times for readability. Revise slides that are too fast or hard to read
- ALL CAPS is considered “screaming” and hard to read—avoid them. Similarly, avoid italics--hard to read
- Choose a large font (30+) because small fonts are hard to read on slides
- Also, it’s best to stick with one color scheme and one or two font types to give your presentation more unity
- Be sure to click highlight or “spotlight” on text slides, so they'll stay onscreen longer.
- Also, slower songs make for a slower slide show--sometimes a good thing in terms of reading ease.
- Pay attention to slide background color, and be sure text shows up well on it for easy reading. For example, black text can hardly be seen on a dark purple background.
- Be sure to select the ½ image pacing (the photos will move a little slower and text slides are easier to read.)
